A London Street Photography YouTube Channel
the STREET THIEF on YOUTUBE
When I started my YouTube channel, the one thing i knew for sure was I didn't want to be another gear review channel. That's just not me. Fifteen years doing this and my success as a photographer's had next to nothing to do with the camera or lens in my hand. It's been about pushing myself, getting outside my comfort zone, over and over.
That's the whole thing I teach atthe Dare Photography Workshops too — I've been running those since 2013. Everything I do is on purpose. I'm constantly trying to challenge myself, but I want it to be fun as well, not some grind.
Here's what I noticed years ago: most photographers steer clear of anything that feels uncomfortable or scary. They stay in their lane, play it safe — and their photos end up just as safe.
That's what the channel's really about. You’ll often catch me out on the street, POV footage, just talking to people, and whatever photos come out of that get shared right alongside the footage. Every video's got something in it — some little insight I want to pass on, something to help other photographers get past that fear when they're out shooting in public.
Because standing out is scary, right? Most people would rather just follow what everyone else is doing. They want someone to tell them how it's meant to be done, or whether what they're shooting even "counts" as real street photography. There's comfort in being told the answer. But think about it — go back through history, music, photography, painting, film, even inventions outside the arts — the people who actually made a mark, more often than not, they got slated for it first. Ridiculed, even, before anyone caught up to what they were doing.
So that's what I'm going for with the channel. I want it to be entertaining, cinematic, good images — but also share how I actually think about taking photos and making stuff happen. I've been doing this as a working photographer for over 17 years now, and on a platform that's mostly hobbyists, that's what sets me apart.
