Shooting Characters in Margate
Margate feels like it’s hanging on for dear life. It all feels a little bit left behind; not quite gentrified enough to to be deemed one of the cool British seaside spots but not run-down enough that people have given up on the place. Personally I fuckin’ love it there and my plan is to dip in and out with the camera over the next year and make a bit of a project of it. There’s an edgy brutalist feel to the place, cinematic, that really excites me as a photographer.
*Let’s not forget Margate has always been a bit of a draw for artists and creatives. Turner stayed and painted there and it’s currently home to the Albion Rooms - a hotel owned by the rock n roll band ‘The Libertines’. Their pub is actually called ‘The Wastelands’ after the TS Elliot poem. Elliot apparently wrote it not a stones throw away. Also … less the forget … the Only Fools and Horses episode ‘Jolly Boys outing’ was also filmed there in the eighties.*

I hope you enjoy the frames.
