Mastering Street Portraits

The secret to nailing good street portraits? Don't let how you’re feeling govern your approach. Fear, worry, thinking you're taking up to much of the subjects time – it's a recipe for a rushed job and a bunch of dime-a-dozen snapshots that any hack could have taken. We need to use fear as an anchor, a reminder to become more aware, so we can slow down, and swim against the tide of wanting to hurry. Taking a photograph of a stranger doesn’t make it a good shot. Anybody can get those shots. We need to slow down and get as much time as possible with the people we’re shooting if our work is going to have an impact.
